My favorite place to get cookies (when I REALLY need cookies) is Levain Bakery! Famous for their giant cookies, which amount to the size of about three regular-sized cookies, Levain does not disappoint. They bake all of their cookies as well as breads and other baked goods, on-site and fresh each day with only the best ingredients.
My personal favorite Levain item is their Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip cookie, which I popped in for today. This cookie is a chocolate-lover’s delight. It has a rich, doughy consistency and is filled with big chunks of chocolate. It’s basically a brownie disguised as a cookie. The best way to eat it (which I didn’t do today) is to sit down in Levain Bakery and eat it right away when it’s fresh off the baking sheet and perfectly melty inside. Sometimes the cookie eating process can get a bit messy, but it’s worth it down to the last bit of chocolate left around your mouth.
What I love about Levain Bakery, aside from the cookies, is the intimate feel of the bakery. You walk down a small set of stairs into the bakery, which is a floor below ground level, and you come upon a small room with counters and stools along the sides. There is a main counter and behind the counter are rows upon rows of baking trays full of fresh cookies. The smell is incredible. Imagine the smell of freshly baked cookies wafting through your house, but times a hundred. The service is great and everyone who works there greets you with a smile. It has the feel of a small neighborhood bakery and it’s just the place to treat yourself to a well deserved dessert.
